Sport at Preston Hedge’s
Sports Premium 2016-2017
Preston Hedges has been allocated £10,100 for the current academic year 2016 – 2017.
We use the Sports Premium to;
Develop and add to the PE and sport activities already on offer.
Some highlights of the impact that the Sports Premium has had at Preston Hedges in include;
- 180 children participating in a Wimbledon Style Tennis Competition leading to increased numbers attending an extra curriculum tennis club.
- 120 children participating in a block of weekly trampolining sessions administered by qualified coaches using Olympic size trampolines. This has led to the introduction and promotion of school/club links where children are regularly participating in a what was, a new sporting opportunity.
- Archery introduced to many children for the very first time. From which our school team successfully participated in a school competition.
Our plan for 2016-17 is shown below:
What our children think!
Year 6 – Skydiving 10.01.17
On Tuesday, we went on a once in a lifetime opportunity to the indoor skydiving at ifly in Milton Keynes. Throughout the exhilarating day we had to show many values such as teamwork, determination and caring. Shortly before we took flight, we watched a short video briefing to explain the basics of flight. Then the instructor showed us some basic hand signals which would help us in the air to know easily what you need to work on. To prepare for our flight we had many requirements such as ear plugs, goggles, helmets and a baggy (for more surface area) jumpsuit. Ready and suited up, we made our way to the flight room. After gathering all the courage and self-discipline and resilience we could – we stepped into the powerful wind tugonnel hearing the faint cheering of our team mates and then got ready to take flight. Adrenaline flowing through us, we entered the wind tunnel whilst being blown into the air by the forceful and powerful wind pressure. Straight away we felt safe, knowing we were in more than capable hands. Our expert instructor grabbed the handles that were attached to our suits and balanced us. The instructor showed many hand signals making sure we got the best flight possible. Then wind in our hair we prepared for Round 2! Stepping out we were filled with pride knowing that what we just did took a lot of aspiration and bravery. We felt great! After lunch, some groups took part in a creative workshop to expand our imagination. Using sportsmanship, co-operation and quick thinking we had to build an extraordinary wind powered vehicle. We then tested our abilities when racing fighting wind with wind!

Year 6 Sky Diving – January 2017
On Tuesday, Year 6 went on a once in a lifetime opportunity to the indoor skydiving at ‘iFly’ in Milton Keynes. Throughout this exhilarating day, the children had to show values such as teamwork, determination, courage and resilience. To ‘skydive’ pupils had to step into a powerful wind tunnel and were then blown into the air by the forceful and powerful wind pressure. Every ‘flight’ was assisted by an expert instructor, and the children had 2 of these amazing ‘flights’. After lunch, some groups took part in a creative workshop where they had to build an extraordinary wind powered vehicle and test it against the wind.
The day was funded by our Sports Premium Allocation and was designed to encourage our children to take risks, have fun and approach new challenges with confidence and conviction: the exact skills that will stand them in good stead for their studies in the reminder of Year 6 and throughout secondary school.
